Mechanism of Action:

  • Amobarbital, a barbiturate, enhances the action of GABA, resulting in sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant effects.

Uses:

  • It was formerly used as a sedative and hypnotic but is seldom used today due to the risk of abuse and the availability of safer alternatives.

Side Effects:

  • Potential side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and in severe cases, respiratory depression, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms.
