Mechanism of action:

  • Amodiaquine acts similarly to chloroquine, inhibiting heme detoxification within the parasite's food vacuole.

Uses:

  • Amodiaquine is used in combination with artesunate as a component of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) to treat uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria, particularly in areas with chloroquine-resistant parasites.

Side effects:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • abdominal pain

  • headache

  • dizziness

  • and rash.

  • Rare but serious side effects include neutropenia, hepatotoxicity, and severe skin reactions.
