Chemical formula:
C47H73NO17
Mechanism of action:
Amphotericin B binds to ergosterol, a major component of fungal cell membranes. This binding creates pores in the membrane, causing leakage of essential cellular contents and ultimately leading to fungal cell death.
Uses:
Amphotericin B is used to treat severe systemic fungal infections, including cryptococcal meningitis, invasive candidiasis, and various mold infections.
Side effects:
Common side effects include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and kidney toxicity. Infusion-related reactions, such as shaking and hypotension, may also occur.
