Antitoxins (Passive Immunity Against Toxins)

Definition

  • Antitoxins are purified antibodies against bacterial toxins, used for immediate immunity in toxin-related infections.

General Method of Preparation

1) Hyperimmunization of Animals (usually horses)

  • Horses are injected with small, increasing doses of bacterial toxin/toxoid.

2) Collection of Antibody-Rich Plasma

  • Blood is drawn after sufficient antibody production.

3) Purification of Antibodies

  • Plasma is purified using precipitation, chromatography, or filtration techniques.

4) Sterile Packaging and Storage

Stored at 2–8°C, sometimes freeze-dried for stability.
