Mechanism of Action:

  • Atenolol is a selective beta-1 receptor antagonist. By specifically targeting beta-1 receptors in the heart, it reduces heart rate and cardiac output, which lowers blood pressure.

Uses:

  • It is used to treat hypertension, angina, and to reduce mortality after a heart attack. It's also used for treating alcohol withdrawal, migraine prophylaxis, and certain types of tremors.

Side Effects:

  • Side effects may include fatigue, dizziness, depression, cold extremities, and in some cases, bradycardia and hypotension.
