  • Description: BHC, also known as hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), is an organochlorine compound. Its structure consists of a cyclohexane ring with six chlorine atoms attached. BHC exists in several isomers, with the gamma isomer (γ-HCH) being the most widely used and commercially significant.

Uses:

  • Used as an insecticide to protect crops, fruits, vegetables, and livestock against pests, including insects, mites, and ticks.

  • The gamma isomer (γ-HCH), also known as lindane, has been used as a pharmaceutical treatment for lice and scabies in humans.

  • Due to environmental persistence, bioaccumulation, and potential adverse effects on human health and wildlife, the use of BHC has been banned or severely restricted in many countries.
