  • Blood products are derived from whole blood or plasma and are used for transfusions, treatments, and medical conditions.

Main Blood Products

  1. Whole Blood: Primarily used in trauma or severe hemorrhage situations.

  2. Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBCs): Used for treating anemia, blood loss during surgery, trauma.

  3. Platelet Concentrates: Used to treat thrombocytopenia, platelet dysfunction, and bleeding disorders.

  4. Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP): Contains clotting factors and is used in bleeding disorders, coagulopathies, or warfarin overdose.

  5. Cryoprecipitate: Rich in fibrinogen, factor VIII, factor XIII, von Willebrand factor; used in hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, and hypofibrinogenemia.

  6. Albumin – Used for shock, burns, and low blood volume conditions.

  7. Immunoglobulins: Antibody-rich plasma components used for immune deficiencies and autoimmune diseases.

Blood Product Applications

  • Emergency Medicine: Blood transfusions in accidents and surgeries.

  • Hemophilia Treatment: Factor concentrates prevent excessive bleeding.

  • Immune Therapy: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy for immune deficiencies.

  • Burn and Trauma Care: Plasma and albumin help maintain blood volume.

Risks Associated with Blood Products

  • Transfusion reactions (acute or delayed)

  • Transmission of infectious diseases (rare due to screening)

  • Immune-mediated complications (e.g., transfusion-related acute lung injury - TRALI)
