Mechanism of Action:
Chlorpromazine blocks dopamine receptors (D1 and D2) in the brain which decreases psychotic thinking and behavior.
Uses:
It's used to treat various types of mental/mood disorders including schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, manic phase of bipolar disorder, and severe behavioral problems in children.
Side Effects:
It can cause drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and weight gain. More serious side effects include severe restlessness/constant need to move (akathisia), shaking (tremor), and muscle stiffness.
