Mechanism of action:

  • Clarithromycin works by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and preventing bacterial growth.

  • It is also a bacteriostatic antibiotic.

Uses:

  • Clarithromycin is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and gastrointestinal infections.

  • It is also used in combination with other antibiotics to treat certain infections, such as Helicobacter pylori infections.

Side effects:

  • Clarithromycin is associated with several side effects, including gastrointestinal disturbances, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

  • It can also cause allergic reactions, including skin rashes and anaphylaxis. In rare cases, clarithromycin can cause liver toxicity and cardiac arrhythmias.
