Mode of action

  • Colestipol hydrochloride forms a compound in the intestine with bile acids, which is then excreted in the faeces.

  • By partially removing the bile acids from the enterohepatic circulation because of this non-systemic effect, it prevents their reabsorption.

Uses

  • To decrease high blood cholesterol levels, cholestyramine is used.

  • This may help in preventing health issues caused on by blood vessel blockage by cholesterol.

  • Additionally, the removal of bile acids from your body is carried out using cholestyramine.

  • Used in the treatment of diarrhoea.

  • Also used in the treatment of hyperlipoproteinemia.
