Chemical formula:
C14H11Cl2NO3
Mechanism of action:
The exact mechanism of action of diloxanide is not well understood. However, it is believed to interfere with the metabolic processes of the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica, ultimately leading to its death.
Uses:
Diloxanide is primarily used to treat asymptomatic intestinal amoebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica. It is often used in combination with other agents like metronidazole to treat invasive amoebic infections.
Side effects:
Diloxanide is generally well-tolerated, with mild gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain) being the most common side effects. Other side effects may include flatulence, pruritus, and urticaria.
