Mechanism of Action:

  • ·        Acts on mu-opioid receptors in the intestine, reducing gut motility and allowing more time for fluid absorption, which helps solidify stool.

Uses:

  • Diarrhea Treatment: Often combined with atropine (as in Lomotil) to reduce abuse potential.

Side Effects:

  • Central Effects at High Doses: Euphoria and CNS depression (rare due to atropine in the formulation).

  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Including constipation and abdominal discomfort.
