Norepinephrine (Noradrenaline)
Chemical Structure/Formula
C8H11NO3
Mechanism of Action:
Norepinephrine acts primarily as a neurotransmitter and hormone in the central and peripheral nervous systems.
It binds predominantly to alpha-adrenergic receptors, causing vasoconstriction and increasing blood pressure.
It also has a minor effect on beta receptors, which can lead to increased heart rate.
Uses:
It is mainly used to treat life-threatening low blood pressure (hypotension) that can occur with certain medical conditions or surgical procedures.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, slow heart rate (bradycardia), arrhythmias, anxiety, and hypertension.
