Definition
Dried human plasma (also called lyophilized plasma) is plasma that has been freeze-dried to allow long-term storage without refrigeration.
Production Process
1) Plasma Collection
Plasma is separated from whole blood via centrifugation.
2) Sterilization & Testing
Plasma is filtered and tested for infections.
3) Lyophilization (Freeze-Drying)
Plasma is frozen and then subjected to vacuum drying to remove water.
This process preserves proteins, clotting factors, and immunoglobulins.
4) Packaging & Storage
Stored in vacuum-sealed containers at room temperature.
Reconstituted with sterile water before transfusion.
Advantages of Dried Plasma
Long shelf life (years)
Easy transport and storage
Used in battlefield medicine, emergency care, and remote areas
Storage of Dried Human Plasma
Stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Must be reconstituted with sterile water before use.
