Fermenter (Bioreactor) – Construction & Working

Construction

  • Cylindrical vessel made of stainless steel or glass.

  • Jacketed for temperature control using cooling media.

  • Sealed top with ports for probes, sensors, and nutrient addition.

  • Includes agitators for mixing.

Working Stages of a Fermenter

Inoculation

  • Microorganisms are introduced into the substrate inside the fermenter.

Growth Phase

  • Microbes consume nutrients and produce the desired product.

  • Controlled temperature, pH, and oxygen levels optimize metabolism.

Harvesting

  • The fermentation product is separated using centrifuges or filters.

Monitoring & Control

  • Sensors and probes track pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen.

  • Data is sent to a computer or PLC that controls agitators, cooling, and nutrient addition.
