Ferrous Gluconate (C₁₂H₂₂FeO₁₄)

Preparation

  • Ferrous gluconate can be prepared by reacting ferrous sulfate with sodium gluconate:

FeSO4 + Na2C6H12O7 → FeC12H22O14 + Na2SO4

Properties

  • Physical Appearance: Yellowish-gray to light green crystalline powder.

  • Solubility: Soluble in water with a mildly sweet taste.

  • Nature: Non-toxic, biodegradable compound.

  • Melting Point: About 180°C (356°F).

Uses

  1. Dietary Supplement: Used to treat iron-deficiency anemia.

  2. Multivitamin Supplements: Often included in combination with other vitamins and minerals.

  3. Food Additive: Used to fortify and enhance the iron content in various food products.

Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from heat and direct sunlight.

Store away from strong oxidizing agents and reducing agents to prevent chemical reactions.
