Mechanism of action:
Fluconazole is a triazole antifungal that inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, leading to membrane disruption and fungal cell death.
Uses:
Fluconazole is used to treat various Candida infections, including vaginal yeast infections, oropharyngeal candidiasis, and esophageal candidiasis. It is also used to treat cryptococcal meningitis.
Side effects:
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Other side effects may include headache, dizziness, and skin rash. In rare cases, it can cause hepatotoxicity (liver damage).
