Gases & Aerosols – Inhalers

Gases

  • Gases are one of the primary states of matter characterized by:

  • No Fixed Shape or Volume: Gases expand to fill the shape and volume of their container.

  • Particle Movement: Gas particles move rapidly and freely, with high kinetic energy and low intermolecular forces.

  • Compressibility: Gases can be compressed significantly because of the large spaces between particles.

  • Examples: Oxygen (O₂), nitrogen (N₂), carbon dioxide (CO₂).

Aerosols – Inhalers

  • Aerosols are suspensions of fine solid particles or liquid droplets in a gas. Inhalers are medical devices that deliver medication directly to the lungs in aerosol form.

Types of Inhalers:

Metered Dose Inhalers (MDIs):

  • Pressurized canisters that release a specific amount of medication as an aerosol.

  • Often used with a spacer to improve delivery to the lungs.

Dry Powder Inhalers (DPIs):

  • Deliver medication in powder form without a propellant.

  • Require the user to inhale quickly to disperse the powder into the lungs.

Applications:

  1. Asthma: Medications like bronchodilators and corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and open airways.

  2. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Similar medications to manage symptoms and improve breathing.
