Mechanism of Action:
Glutethimide works by increasing the activity of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. It reduces the communication between the cerebral cortex and the limbic system, leading to sedative and hypnotic effects.
Uses:
It was used as a sedative and hypnotic and for the treatment of insomnia. However, its use has been largely discontinued due to its high potential for abuse and the availability of safer drugs.
Side Effects:
Side effects can include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases, respiratory depression, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms.
