Mode of Action

  • Sympathetic Inhibition: Blocks norepinephrine release from postganglionic sympathetic neurons by disrupting storage vesicles.

  • Peripheral Effects: Reduces peripheral vascular resistance and cardiac output, lowering blood pressure.

  • Renal Effects: Decreases renin secretion, contributing to blood pressure reduction.

Uses

  1. Hypertension: Primarily used in severe or resistant hypertension.

  2. Pheochromocytoma: Manages blood pressure before surgical removal of the tumor.

  3. Peripheral Vascular Disease: Improves blood flow by reducing vascular resistance.

  4. Chronic Pain: Sometimes used off-label for its sympatholytic effects.
