Mechanism of Action:
Hydroxyamphetamine is a sympathomimetic amine that works by stimulating the release of norepinephrine from nerve endings. It is similar in structure and pharmacological effects to amphetamine, but with less central nervous system stimulation.
Uses:
It is primarily used in eye drops to dilate the pupil (mydriasis) for diagnostic purposes. It is also sometimes used in combination with other medications for the treatment of certain types of ptosis (drooping eyelid).
Side Effects:
Side effects can include increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, anxiety, and headache. Local side effects in the eye may include temporary stinging and increased sensitivity to light.
