Mechanism of action:

  • Ketoconazole, an imidazole antifungal, inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, causing membrane disruption and fungal cell death.

Uses:

  • Ketoconazole is used to treat various fungal infections, including skin infections, systemic infections, and seborrheic dermatitis. It is also used in shampoos to treat dandruff.

Side effects:

  • Topical side effects may include local irritation, itching, or burning. Oral use may cause gastrointestinal disturbances, such as nausea or vomiting. In rare cases, it can cause hepatotoxicity (liver damage) or adrenal insufficiency
