L-Thyroxine (Levothyroxine):

L-Thyroxine (Levothyroxine)

Type:

  • Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4).

Mechanism of Action:

  • L-Thyroxine acts as a replacement for the natural thyroid hormone.

  • In the body, it is converted to L-Triiodothyronine (T3), the more active form of thyroid hormone.

  • This conversion mimics the natural process in the thyroid gland.

Uses:

  • It is primarily used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones.

  • It's also used in the treatment of goiter (thyroid enlargement) and in certain cases of thyroid cancer.

Administration:

  • It's typically taken orally, and dosage is adjusted based on regular blood tests to measure thyroid hormone levels.
