Mechanism of Action:
Labetalol is a mixed alpha and beta-blocker. It blocks beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors as well as alpha-1 adrenergic receptors, leading to vasodilation and decreased heart rate.
Uses:
It is used in the management of hypertension, including hypertension in pregnancy.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and in some cases, orthostatic hypotension. It may also cause scalp tingling and may worsen symptoms of asthma.
