Mechanism of Action:

  • Metaraminol is a sympathomimetic amine that acts predominantly on alpha-adrenergic receptors, leading to vasoconstriction and an increase in blood pressure. It also has minor beta-adrenergic effects, which can increase heart rate.

Uses:

  • It is primarily used in the treatment of acute hypotension (low blood pressure), especially during surgical procedures or in certain cases of shock.

Side Effects:

  • Side effects may include headache, anxiety, palpitations, and cardiac arrhythmias. It can also cause peripheral vasoconstriction, which may lead to reduced blood flow to certain organs.
