Mechanism of Action:

  • Methyldopa is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist.

  • It lowers blood pressure by decreasing sympathetic outflow from the central nervous system, which dilates blood vessels.

Uses:

  • Primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), including during pregnancy.

Side Effects:

  • Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and headache.
