Mechanism of Action

  • Binds to 30S ribosome, blocking protein synthesis.

  • Has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties in addition to antibacterial effects.

Uses

  • Treats acne, meningococcal carriers, MRSA, and skin infections.

  • Investigated for neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., ALS, Huntington’s disease).

Side Effects

  • Vestibular toxicity (dizziness, vertigo).

  • Hyperpigmentation (skin, gums, and sclera discoloration).

  • Autoimmune reactions (drug-induced lupus, serum sickness).
