MPO (Milk and Milk Products Order, India): Objective, functions

  • Similar to the FPO, this is specific to milk products.

  • The Milk and Milk Products Order (MPO), issued under the Essential Commodities Act, aims to regulate the production, supply, and distribution of milk and milk products across India.

Objective:

  • To regulate the production, supply, and distribution of milk and milk products to ensure their quality and safety.

  • To certify dairy processing units and ensure they adhere to the necessary safety and quality standards.

  • To promote good practices in the handling, processing, and packaging of dairy products.

  • To encourage improvement in the quality of dairy products for domestic consumption and export.

1. Licensing:

  • Similar to the FPO, the MPO requires dairy processors and operators to obtain a license.

  • The MPO establishes quality standards for milk and milk products.

  • These standards cover aspects such as fat content, solids-not-fat (SNF) content, and the absence of contaminants, ensuring that consumers receive safe and nutritious dairy products.

3. Regulation of Production and Sale:

  • The MPO regulates the conditions under which milk and milk products can be produced, stored, and sold.

  • This includes specifying the sanitary and hygienic conditions under which dairy products must be processed.

4. Inspection and Compliance:

  • Through regular inspections of dairy processing facilities, the MPO ensures that the production and handling of milk and milk products comply with the set standards.

  • It has the authority to take corrective actions against non-compliant entities.
