Mudaliar Committee – 1959

Purpose of Mudaliar Committee

  • Chaired by Dr. A.L. Mudaliar, this committee was formed to assess the progress made since the Bhore Committee and to suggest further improvements in the healthcare system. (Mudaliar Committee)

Objectives

  • Review the implementation of the Bhore Committee’s recommendations.

  • Evaluate the adequacy of the existing health services.

  • Suggest measures to address deficiencies in the system.

Findings

  • Significant gaps remained in the healthcare system, particularly in rural areas.

  • There was a shortage of trained medical and paramedical staff.

  • The existing pharmaceutical infrastructure needed strengthening.

Recommendations

  1. Expansion of health services, particularly in rural areas.

  2. Establishment of Health Units at district and state levels for better administration.

  3. Increase in training facilities for pharmacists and healthcare workers.

  4. Implementation of quality control measures for pharmaceuticals.

  5. Strengthening drug control organizations to enforce legislation effectively.
