Mechanism of action:

  • Nalidixic acid inhibits bacterial DNA replication by targeting DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, preventing the unwinding of DNA and subsequent replication.

Uses:

  • Nalidixic acid is primarily used to treat uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacteria.

Side effects:

  • Side effects can include gastrointestinal disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, central nervous system (CNS) effects (e.g., headache, dizziness), and phototoxicity.
