Mechanism of action:
Binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis.
Use:
Mainly used topically for skin and eye infections; also used orally for bowel surgery preparation.
Side effects:
Ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, contact dermatitis (skin irritation), and malabsorption syndrome when given orally.
Example:
Often used in combination ointments like Neosporin.
