Mechanism of action:

  • Binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis.

Use:

  • Mainly used topically for skin and eye infections; also used orally for bowel surgery preparation.

Side effects:

  • Ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, contact dermatitis (skin irritation), and malabsorption syndrome when given orally.

Example:

  • Often used in combination ointments like Neosporin.
