  • Norgestrel is a synthetic progestogen with a 19-nor steroid structure, lacking the carbon at position 19 of the progesterone backbone.

Mode of Action

  • Progestogen Activity: Mimics the effects of natural progesterone, regulating the menstrual cycle and preventing ovulation.

  • Endometrial Stabilization: Thins the endometrial lining, making it unsuitable for implantation.

  • Cervical Mucus Thickening: Increases viscosity of cervical mucus, impeding sperm penetration.

Uses of Norgestrel

  • Oral Contraception: Used in combination with estrogens in combined oral contraceptive pills to prevent pregnancy.

  • Menstrual Disorders: Manages irregular menstrual cycles and reduces menstrual bleeding.

  • Endometriosis: Helps in reducing the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus.
