Mode of Action

  • Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that irreversibly binds to and inhibits the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme system (proton pump) in gastric parietal cells.

  • This inhibition blocks the final step of gastric acid secretion, leading to a significant and prolonged reduction in stomach acid production.

Uses

  1. Peptic Ulcers: Promotes healing by reducing gastric acid secretion.

  2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Alleviates symptoms by decreasing stomach acidity.

  3. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: Manages conditions with excessive acid production.

  4. Erosive Esophagitis: Heals inflammation and damage to the esophagus.

  5. Maintenance Therapy: Prevents recurrence of ulcers and GERD symptoms.
