Chemical formula:
C7H10ClN3O3
Mechanism of action:
Ornidazole is another nitroimidazole derivative with a similar mechanism of action to metronidazole. It is selectively taken up by anaerobic organisms and protozoa, where it undergoes a reduction reaction, forming toxic intermediates that damage DNA structure and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, leading to cell death.
Uses:
Ornidazole is used to treat various infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, such as giardiasis, amoebic dysentery, and bacterial vaginosis.
Side effects:
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), headache, dizziness, and metallic taste. In rare cases, it may cause peripheral neuropathy or seizures.
