Mechanism of Action:

  • Oxymetazoline is an alpha-adrenergic agonist that acts on the nasal mucosa to cause vasoconstriction.

  • This reduces blood flow to the nasal tissues, decreasing swelling and congestion.

Uses:

  • It's primarily used as a nasal decongestant to relieve nasal congestion associated with colds, allergies, and sinusitis. It's also used in eye drops for redness relief.

Side Effects:

  • Side effects include temporary burning or stinging, sneezing, and dryness in the nose.

  • With prolonged use, it can cause rebound congestion, making nasal symptoms worse.
