Mechanism of action:

  • Binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis.

Use:

  • Treats a variety of infections, including acne and certain types of pneumonia.

Side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal upset, photosensitivity, tooth discoloration in children, and potential toxicity in pregnancy.

Example:

  • Terramycin is a branded version of this drug.
