Mechanism of Action:
Penicillins disrupt the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls, leading to lysis and death of the bacteria.
Use:
Used to treat a variety of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as streptococcal and staphylococcal infections, pneumonia, scarlet fever, and ear, skin, gum, mouth, and throat infections.
Side Effects:
Can cause allergic reactions, rash, nausea, diarrhea, and superinfection.
Example:
Penicillin G, Penicillin V.
