Mechanism of Action:

  • Acts as a kappa-opioid receptor agonist and a partial agonist or antagonist at mu-opioid receptors. This mixed activity can lead to less respiratory depression and a lower risk of dependence compared to full mu-opioid agonists.

Uses:

  • Moderate to Severe Pain: Often used in settings where the use of stronger opioids is to be avoided.

Side Effects:

  • Psychotomimetic Effects: Including hallucinations and confusion, particularly at higher doses.

  • Less Respiratory Depression: Compared to full mu-agonists, but still present.

  • Withdrawal Syndrome: If used after or with other full mu-opioid agonists.
