Mechanism of Action:

  • Phenobarbital is a barbiturate that enhances GABA activity, producing sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant effects.

Uses:

  • It is primarily used to control seizures.

  • It's also used to treat neonatal withdrawal and in some cases, for short-term treatment of insomnia.

Side Effects:

  • Potential side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and, in rare cases, paradoxical hyperactivity in children. Long-term use can lead to physical dependence.
