Chemical Structure/Formula:
C18H22ClNO
Mechanism of Action:
Phenoxybenzamine is a non-selective, irreversible alpha-adrenergic antagonist. By blocking alpha-adrenergic receptors, it causes vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure.
Uses:
Its primary use is in the management of pheochromocytoma, where it helps to control hypertension. It is also used in some cases to treat Raynaud's phenomenon and autonomic hyperreflexia.
Side Effects:
Side effects include postural hypotension, nasal congestion, fatigue, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Its irreversible binding means that the effects can last even after stopping the drug.
