Chemical Structure:
C15H21N3O2
Mechanism of Action:
Physostigmine binds reversibly to the active site of acetylcholinesterase, preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine and thus enhancing cholinergic transmission at all sites where acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter.
Uses:
Its uses include treating glaucoma, reversing anticholinergic toxicity, and occasionally for symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.
Side Effects:
Side effects stem from overstimulation of muscarinic and nicotinic receptors and include increased salivation, sweating, bronchial secretions, gastrointestinal motility, bradycardia, miosis, and at high doses, central nervous system disturbance, leading to convulsions or respiratory depression.
