Mechanism of Action:

  • Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic drug that acts predominantly on alpha-adrenergic receptors, causing vasoconstriction. This reduces the swelling of nasal mucosa, leading to a decrease in congestion.

Uses:

  • Widely used as a decongestant in cold and allergy medications. It helps relieve nasal and sinus congestion and can also be used to relieve ear congestion.

Side Effects:

  • Common side effects include insomnia, nervousness, dizziness, and headache. High doses or misuse can lead to more serious side effects like hypertension and arrhythmias. Due to its potential for misuse in the synthesis of methamphetamine, its availability is regulated in many countries.
