Mechanism of Action:

  • Pyridostigmine is also a quaternary ammonium compound. It inhibits acetylcholinesterase at the neuromuscular junction, increasing the concentration of acetylcholine and thereby enhancing neuromuscular transmission.

Uses:

  • It is primarily used to treat myasthenia gravis and has been used as a prophylactic agent against nerve agents in chemical warfare.

Side Effects:

  • Side effects include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, increased salivation and sweating, and muscle twitching. Overdose can lead to a cholinergic crisis.
