Mechanism of action:

  • Rifabutin, like rifampicin, binds to the beta subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, inhibiting RNA synthesis and thereby preventing bacterial replication.

Uses:

  • Rifabutin is primarily used for the prophylaxis and treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in patients with HIV/AIDS.

  • It can also be used as an alternative to rifampicin in the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) in patients with rifampicin-resistant strains or intolerance.

Side effects:

  • Side effects can include gastrointestinal disturbances, hepatotoxicity, uveitis, skin rashes, arthralgia, and red-orange discoloration of body fluids.
