Mechanism of action:

  • Rifampicin binds to the beta subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, inhibiting RNA synthesis and thereby preventing bacterial replication.

Uses:

  • Rifampicin is used in combination with other antitubercular drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB).

  • It is also used for the treatment of other bacterial infections, such as leprosy and certain staphylococcal and meningococcal infections.

Side effects:

  • Side effects can include hepatotoxicity, gastrointestinal disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, flu-like syndrome, and red-orange discoloration of body fluids.
