Right to Information (RTI) Act-2005

Introduction

  • The Right to Information (RTI) Act-2005 empowers citizens to access information held by public authorities to promote transparency and accountability in governance.

Objectives of Right to Information (RTI) Act-2005

  1. To promote openness and prevent corruption.

  2. To empower citizens with access to government records.

  3. To ensure accountability in public services.

Key Provisions

1) Scope

  • Applies to all public authorities – government departments, ministries, PSUs, etc.

  • Private bodies are covered indirectly if they receive government funding.

2) Right to Information

  • Citizens can request information related to policies, decisions, and expenditures.

3) Time Limit

  • Information must be provided within 30 days of request.

  • In urgent cases (life or liberty), it should be provided within 48 hours.

4) Exemptions

  • National security, trade secrets, and personal information are excluded.

5) Penalties

  • Officers failing to provide information can be fined.

  • Pharmacists can use RTI to check compliance with drug laws, pricing policies, and government tenders related to medicines and vaccine
