Serum-Immune Blood Derivatives (Passive Immunization)

Definition

  • These are antibody-containing blood products from humans or animals used for immediate protection against infections.

General Method of Preparation

1) Blood Collection from Hyperimmune Donors

  • Donors with high antibody titers (post-infection or vaccination) are selected.

2) Plasma Separation

  • Blood is centrifuged to separate plasma from cells.

3) Immunoglobulin Purification

  • IgG antibodies are purified using precipitation, chromatography, and filtration.

4) Sterile Packaging and Storage

  • Stored at 2–8°C, some are freeze-dried.

Examples

  • Rabies Immune Globulin (RIG) – Post-exposure rabies treatment

  • Hepatitis B Immune Globulin (HBIG) – For newborns of infected mothers

  • Tetanus Immune Globulin (TIG) – Emergency protection against tetanus
