Mechanism of action:

  • Binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome leading to inhibition of protein synthesis.

Use:

  • Primarily used for tuberculosis and endocarditis.

Side effects:

  • Nephrotoxicity (kidney damage), ototoxicity (damage to the ear, particularly the cochlea or auditory nerve), hypersensitivity reactions.

Example:

  • Generic drug used in combination therapy for tuberculosis.
