Chemical Structure:
C13H14ClN3
Mechanism of Action:
Tacrine is a central-acting acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It increases acetylcholine availability in the brain, thereby enhancing cholinergic transmission.
Uses:
It was one of the first drugs approved for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease but is less commonly used now due to its side effects and the availability of other agents.
Side Effects:
Significant hepatotoxicity, gastrointestinal disturbances, and other cholinergic side effects have been reported.
