Taxonomical Classification

  • This classification follows botanical and zoological taxonomy, grouping drugs based on their family, genus, and species according to the classification system of Carl Linnaeus.

Examples

A) Family: Solanaceae

  • Atropa belladonna (Belladonna)

  • Datura stramonium (Datura)

  • Hyoscyamus niger (Henbane)

B) Family: Papaveraceae

  • Papaver somniferum (Opium Poppy)

Advantages

  • Helps in identifying related species that may have medicinal value.

  • Provides a scientific basis for classification.

Disadvantages of Taxonomical Classification

  • Requires botanical knowledge to understand plant families.

  • Not useful for pharmacists and medical professionals who are more concerned with therapeutic effects.
